Charcot neuroarthropathy is destruction of the joints of the foot or ankle due to trauma on a diabetic foot. Often, it is overlooked unfortunately. It manifests as a red, hot, swollen foot or ankle in an uncontrolled diabetic patient. The A1c is usually over 10, and blood sugars are often uncontrolled. An X-ray is necessary, however in the very earliest stages no X-ray signs show up. If the condition progresses, the joints are destroyed, blunted, debris is seen, and the latest stages, bone consolidation is seen.
