Gangrene is tissue death. Often, it occurs in diabetic patients, but also occurs in patients who have arterial disease. Wet means the presence of bacteria. Wet gangrene ranges is a surgical emergency, since it can progress to gas gangrene, which is a surgical emergency. The bacteria multiply quite rapidly in the presence of dead tissue. Dry gangrene is usually left alone unless it progresses to wet gangrene.
